Regional: Bay Area Cities Spend 40 Percent More Than Nationall Average

Households in the San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose metropolitan area spent about 40 percent more than the average U.S. household in 2005 and 2006, according to a survey released Wednesday by the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The consumer expenditure survey indicated that the households in those Bay Area cities spent an average of $66,344 per year compared with a national average of $47,421.

MARIN and much of California have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to provide a supply of affordable housing without fostering environmentally unsound growth. The current precipitous decline in real estate prices makes that possible.

Instead of foisting inappropriate development, government and housing advocates including the Marin Community Foundation must shift their focus.

U.S. unemployment rate hits 4-year high

(08-01) 13:51 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- The nation's job market contracted in July and unemployment rose to a four-year high as employers across a broad swath of industries hunkered down.

Payrolls outside the farm sector dipped by 51,000, while the jobless rate rose to 5.7 percent, up 0.2 percentage points from June, the Labor Department reported Friday.

Plan Afoot to Get S.F. Workers Out of Cars

BUSINESS' OBLIGATION: Firms would have to provide transit passes or shuttle service or help employees set up pretax accounts



(07-30) 21:11 PDT -- Businesses with more than 20 employees working in San Francisco would be required to help their workers ditch their cars and commute to work on transit or in vanpools under a proposal being considered by city officials.

The goal of the plan, which would be the first in the nation, is to cut greenhouse gas emissions and improve air quality by getting more people out of polluting cars.
