SAN LEANDRO — If downtown San Leandro were a class at a university, Craig Semmelmeyer would be the professor.

His firm, Main Street Property Services Inc., has been contracted by the city to help revitalize the downtown area by attracting more retailers and making it the destination spot everyone wishes it would be.

OAKLAND — As dockworkers shut down ports, anti-war demonstrators protested against the war in Iraq, and others marched for immigrant rights, city workers held a May Day demonstration of their own Thursday.

Some 400 workers and their supporters gathered for a noon-time rally at City Hall to protest what they call the unfair treatment of temporary employees — and to offer a few choice comments about the administration's approach in upcoming contract negotiations.

OAKLAND — The location seems great. It's visible from the freeway, easy to get to, and there's plenty of parking — not to mention a large community full of potential customers.
