With the statewide drought upsetting homeowners who cling to their gardens and lawns, the concept of "gray water" irrigation systems is enjoying a kind of revival in interest.

"Whereas we used to get one or two requests a year about gray water before the drought, now we get about one inquiry a day," said Dick Bennett, water conservation administrator for East Bay Municipal Utility District. EBMUD supplies brochures and guidelines on how to install gray water systems.

Oakland: De La Fuente Proposes Green Building Ordinance

Oakland City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente said today that he is preparing a "green building ordinance" for residential development in Oakland.

Partnering with the Home Builders Association of Northern California, Build It Green, the Oakland Planning Commission, the local building industry, and environmental organizations, De La Fuente said he wants to bring people together to develop a "meaningful" green building policy.

Richmond seeking developer for pre-war nursery

With financing for housing in trouble, Richmond city officials are hunting for a private developer with the financial wherewithal to help build more than 200 new housing units at a pre-World War II Japanese flower nurseries.

Dubbed the Miraflores Housing Project, the plan calls for as many as 120 townhouses or condominiums and 90 apartments for seniors at Florida Avenue and South 45th Street.

Richmond's Ford Assembly Plant wins national historic preservation award

The old Ford assembly plant on Richmond's waterfront survived the end of its car-assembling years, a major earthquake, water damage, vandals and multiple proposals for its demolition to witness a rebirth that has now captured national acclaim.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded the building one of 15 National Preservation Honor Awards. Winners will be lauded at a conference Oct. 23.
