Newsom Signs $6.5 Billion SF City Budget

 SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom Wednesday signed the city's $6.5 billion 2008-09 budget, approved Tuesday by a 10-1 vote from the Board of Supervisors.

At a ceremony Wednesday afternoon in City Hall, Newsom trumpeted the "largest budget in our city's history" as successfully closing a projected $338 million budget shortfall while significantly investing in city infrastructure, public safety and education, and expanding the city's universal health care plan.

It could be your neighborhood that's making you fat - or keeping you slender.

A new study found that the year your neighborhood was built may be just as important as diet and exercise for shedding pounds. Those who live in neighborhoods built before 1950 are trimmer than their counterparts who reside in more modern communities, the study reported.

The number of homeless people nationwide declined about 12 percent between 2005 and 2007, including drops of 35 percent in Contra Costa County and nearly 6 percent in Alameda County, a federal agency reported Tuesday.
